Crisci - Smagala Memorial Park

Lt. John Crisci - FF. Stan Smagala Memorial Park

With the tragic events of September 11, 2001 a group of committed individuals set forth to honor two neighbors lost that day. Lt. John Crisci and Firefighter Stan Smagala both members of the F.D.N.Y. and residents of New England Village, Holbrook NY, made the supreme sacrifice in the performance of their duties.

Crisci-Smagala Memorial ParkTo honor this sacrifice, soon afterwards this group undertook the task of developing a permanent living memorial. In conjunction with K.I.C. (Keep Islip Clean) and with assistance from Suffolk Legislator Bill Lindsay The Holbrook Chamber of Commerce, and The Holbrook Fire Department in the spring of 2002 ground was broken and the long work had begun. Much time and effort was needed particularly the first summer as intentions were to dedicate this park on the first anniversary in September 2002. Subsequent improvements were planned over the following four year period. These goals were achieved through countless individuals, volunteering to donate their time and personnel expertise and even more individuals, primarily John and Stan’s neighbors providing the much needed financial support.

Since its dedication the Lt. John Crisci – FF. Stan Smagala Memorial Park has grown and developed to not only be a place of honor for these two neighborhood heroes but also a point of civic pride for entire Holbrook community now and in the future. It is the theoretical theme of the park that the lives these two gentlemen led continue through this living tribute for all.
